You know how it goes – On frigid days, spring can seem like a faraway dream, but then the clouds clear, the sun makes an appearance, and the promise of warmer days fills you with intense happiness. With spring just around the corner, now is the best time to plan your trip to Bar Harbor.
A charming and peaceful time of year, spring is a great season to take advantage of Acadia’s popular trails and Bar Harbor’s shopping and restaurants, just as they begin to open their doors again. You’ll revel in memorable attractions, sunny afternoons, and the sights, smells, and sounds that is nature waking up from winter once again.
Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park Spring Weather & What to Pack
Springtime in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park can mean crisp air, ample sunshine, and spring showers (and flowers). If that sounds like it runs the gamut, you may be right. Don’t forget to layer up as sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, and raincoats are your friends during these months. Temperatures can range from 30-70 °F (-1-21 °C). Throw a warm jacket in your pack when you head out – temperatures at mountain peaks can be notably different from Bar Harbor weather.

Jordan Pond Loop, or hike up the rocky path of

3. Rainy Day Exploring
Spring showers? Enjoy it – there is plenty to do indoors in Bar Harbor. From cozy movie days
to unique museum exploring, there’s no need to take a rain
check.
- Movie time? Upgrade your popcorn to pizza! Catch a movie while enjoying a specialty pie or build your own pizza at Reel Pizza Cinerama.
- Learn about the history of the Wabanaki Nations, the first settlers of Maine, and their present-day legacy at the Abbe Museum, the first and only Smithsonian Affiliate in Maine. (The Abbe Museum reopens for the 2024 season starting in May.)
- Celebrate the work of Wendell Gilley by learning about the art of bird carving at the Wendell Gilley Museum. (Now through May 12, the Wendell Gilley Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays before returning to regular hours.)

- For those who crave physical activity despite the rain, indoor climbing gym Volta delivers a variety of climbing walls and snack bar to boot.
- Beginning in May 2024, experience a wine tasting at Bar Harbor Cellars - and don't skip out on the "chocolate room."
4. Biking and Bike Rentals
There’s nothing quite like the spring sunshine warming your cheeks as you ride your bike after a long winter. And while bikes are not permitted on hiking trails, you have the entire 27-mile Park Loop Road to enjoy, along with 45 miles of carriage roads (again, be sure to stay up to date on the
current conditions of trails).
Need a bike? We’ve got you covered. Rent an electric bike from
Acadia Ebike Adventure or join
Island Time E-bike for a guided tour – in either case, the motor will come in handy to get you up the steep hills, if needed. Those seeking a traditional bike can stop by
Acadia Bike, re-opening in May 2024.
5. Shopping
Craving some Maine
sweet treats? Or seeking a wearable memento from your trip, like an extra
cozy sweatshirt or a replica
1950s Bar Harbor High School sweater? Bar Harbor has you covered. This is the time of year when things begin
to open up again, so store hours vary. Be sure to check the store’s website or give them a call.
6. Explore Mount Desert Island's Gardens
Not far from the charm of Bar Harbor and the expansive lands of Acadia are a couple of beautifully maintained gardens. Celebrate the return of spring with a trip to the
Wild Gardens of Acadia, where you’ll bear witness to over 400 indigenous plant species across their serene landscapes. Or, head to the
