Bar Island Trail

Ready for a one-of-a-kind hike? The Bar Island Trail is a 1.9-mile out-and-back adventure that you can only experience at low tide! This unique path reveals a natural sandbar, connecting Bar Harbor to Bar Island, giving you the rare chance to walk across the ocean floor, literally!
Fun fact: Bar Harbor got its name from this very sandbar! But timing is everything! The sandbar is only exposed for about 1.5 hours before and after low tide, so check the tide charts before you go, or you might be stranded until the ocean decides to let you leave!
Along the way, you’ll wander through wildflower meadows, discover historic remnants, and soak in the beauty of Acadia National Park. Leashed pups are welcome, making it a perfect family-friendly adventure! Just don’t forget: since this trail is part of Acadia National Park, you’ll need a park pass.

Membership Spotlight: PeekyToe Provisions
Owned by Cyndi and Drew, PeekyToe Provisions has undergone an incredible transformation! Their newly renovated Bar Harbor space now features a cozy 36-seat restaurant, a full bar, and a covered outdoor patio with an additional 28-30 seats. Their fresh seafood market boasts a lobster tank and retail space, all while staying true to their commitment to sustainability.

As one of the first business supporters of the Bar Harbor Community Solar Farm, PeekyToe has continued to invest in renewable energy, recently installing solar panels on their new building. They also compost all food waste including lobster, clam, mussel, and oyster shells and source all seafood locally or through responsible fisheries. From energy to ingredients, sustainability is at the heart of everything they do. Best of all, they’re open year-round, so you can enjoy fresh, local seafood no matter the season!
