Victorian-era librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan produced 14 comic operas together and their works are still performed around the world. Join the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Maine to learn more about Gilbert and Sullivan and their impact and enjoy a sample performance from their upcoming show “Iolanthe” at a pre-show discussion the Jesup Memorial Library on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
After getting a brief background on who Gilbert and Sullivan were as well as their work, cast members David Porter and Joe Marshall (who plays The Lord Chancellor in “Iolanthe”) will discuss the show with director Dorothy Alf-Wheatcraft. They will then perform select pieces from the show accompanied by musical director Sandy Blanchette on piano.
“Iolanthe,” or “The Peer and the Peri,” opened at the Savoy Theatre on November 25, 1882 and ran for 398 performances. It is the seventh Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration. The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Maine will perform “Iolanthe” at the Grand in Ellsworth from February 8 through February 10 and then from February 15 through February 17.
