Introduction to Encaustic with Dietlind Vander Schaaf Encaustic, meaning “to burn in” in Greek, is an art form dating back to the 5th century BC. Used as a contemporary medium, it is a versatile method of painting with a beeswax-based paint and a heated palette. Saturday, August 20th and Sunday, August 21st from 10:00am to 4:00pm ArtWaves 1345A Hwy 102 Town Hill Bar Harbor 207-266-0010 To Register: https://www.artwavesmdi.org/event-4803302 $360 for a 2-day workshop including materials ($350 for members) Adults of all skill levels This hands-on studio course will introduce participants to safety, supports, and encaustic history while providing demonstrations and the opportunity to practice and apply 2D techniques including application, fusing, color mixing, etching, texturing, graphite and Xerox transfers, collaging, and working with R&F Pigment Sticks. Masks, vax'd (over 5), and distancing for staff and participant safety. About the instructor: Dietlind Vander Schaaf holds an MFA from the University of San Francisco and an MA from the University of Southern Maine. Her work has been described as the transformation of “disparate objects into elegantly simple compositions of pattern and grace” (Artscope). Vander Schaaf has exhibited at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Conrad Wilde Gallery, The Fuller Craft Museum, Kolman & Pryor, and On Center Gallery, among others, and been featured in Maine Home + Design, Decor Maine, DowneastMagazine, UPPERCASE, and Artscope. Vander Schaaf is a Core Instructor for R&F Handmade Paints, an Ampersand Ambassador, and the former president of New England Wax. She is an annual presenter at the International Encaustic Conference and the recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission and International Encaustic Artists, as well as a Tending Space Artist Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation. Vander Schaaf teaches workshops throughout the country, including Haystack, Maine College of Art, Penland, Arrowmont, Castle Hill Center for the Arts, Snow Farm, Rhode Island School of Design, and internationally at Zijdelings in The Netherlands.
