Listen to the true stories of wardens in the Maine Warden Service during a virtual author talk on Zoom with Daren Worcester on Tuesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. with the Jesup Memorial Library. Worcester’s “Open Season: True Stories of the Maine Warden Service” features 20 stories from 12 different wardens who have a combined 300 years of service patrolling Maine’s North Woods.
Before reality TV, GPS devices, and dashboard computers, there was a coming of age for the Maine Warden Service. It was a time when a compass, map, and one’s wits were what mattered most in the field. “Open Season” includes stories from two former colonels, two lieutenants, two sergeants, four district wardens, a warden pilot, and one currently active-duty corporal. In addition to hair-raising, life-and-death scenarios “Open Season” features other stories of life in the field such as a child innocently outing his parents as “looking for deer” at night, the doldrums of a stakeout, and the grief of tragedy. See through the eyes of these wardens and feel the excitement of a twig snapped in the dark, the frustration of second guessing yourself when lives are at stake and the duty to do what is right, even when it means breaking the law.
V. Paul Reynolds, Editor of Northwoods Sporting Journal writes “Worcester has written a wonderfully authentic book that is anything but a recycle of warden stories that we have already seen on TV or read before… the book and the detailed recountings of these events kept me reading well past my bedtime.”
Worcester is a native of Hanover, Maine, and a graduate of the University of Maine. He has been published in Backpacker and Down East magazines, and he runs the website northeasthikes.com.
