Join author Rich Bard as he travels through the patchwork of fishing villages, rocky coastlines, wild blueberry fields and vast stretches of forestland stretching from Ellsworth to the Canadian border, a hundred miles away during a virtual author talk on Friday, July 10 at 7 p.m. Bard is the author of “Beyond Acadia: Exploring the Bold Coast of Down East Maine,” the first travel guide that exclusively focuses on this section of the Maine coast.
“Beyond Acadia” is an engaging and informative guide to the area east of Ellsworth and Winter Harbor, going all the way to the Canadian border. Bard highlights the countless ways to engage with the natural world in the area, from dozens of hiking trails to myriad paddling options to locally grown, healthy food to arts and music that evoke the landscape in which they are created. The book features photos, maps and an easy to understand format for people who want to take their Maine experience “beyond Acadia,” both literally and figuratively. Bard shares the beautiful hiking trails that overlook cliffs that then plunge a hundred feet to the crashing surf below. He also brings you down the quiet country roads that wind through the forest, picturesque villages, art galleries, breweries, wineries, farm stands, campgrounds and inns that dot the coast.
Bard spent 15 years in careers that exposed him to everything the Bold Coast has to offer. Bard spent more than a decade as a state wildlife biologist which had him hiking, paddling, and snowshoeing on a nearly daily basis through this area of Maine. He also spent countless hours talking with members of the public about their favorite destinations and things they may have either discovered or created themselves. Bard also spent four years as the Executive Director of Downeast Coastal Conservancy. He currently lives in Portland, Maine and is the executive director of the Scarborough Land Trust.
